Splurge v. save: Hollywood insider tips for getting a red-carpet look

Charlotte-based hair and makeup artist Jami Svay has worked on some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including actresses Julianne Moore and Freida Pinto, and the cast of “America’s Next Top Model.” Now, she’s offering tips for getting that red-carpet look on a more modest budget.

Here, she shares which beauty items are worth the investment—and which you can go drugstore-chic with.

5 ITEMS WORTH SPLURGING FOR

Splurge_Foundation1. Foundation

If you get a good foundation, everything else goes on easy. The Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation ($61, sephora.com) comes in great colors and goes on smooth.

2. Concealer
Splurge_concealer
Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Éclat (“Radiant Touch”) concealer
($42, sephora.com) works hard and is infused with a highlighter to help brighten.

3. Highlighter

If you want that dewy glow factor, BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector ($41, sephora.com) is the product for you.

4. Mascara
I’m currently doing a mascara trial (just bought 20 of them), and I’m loving Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Curling & Lifting Mascara ($24, sephora.com). I like how it separates my lashes and also curls them, even with just one coat.

5. Fiber lashes
Splurge_Fiber Lash
Used in conjunction with mascara, Tarte’s Best In Faux Lash Extending Fibers ($24, sephora.com) builds on top of your real lashes, creating the look of thick, stunning fake lashes.

5 ITEMS TO SAVE ON

Steal_Lip gloss1. Lip gloss
L’Oréal’s Infallible 8HR Pro Gloss ($9.99, Ulta.com) has a sheen but also wears for a long time—important for a brides who want coverage they don’t have to worry about.

Untitled2. Nail polish
A manicure is great, but if you want to save some cash, opt for Essie’s “Hubby for Dessert” polish ($8.50, essie.com). It’s a really pale, creamy lilac color and part of the company’s 2015 Bridal Collection.

3. Eyeshadow
L’Oréal’s Color Riche La Palette Nude 1($15.99, Target.com) is the drugstore’s answer to Urban Decay’s lauded Naked Palette, which retails for $54. The palette comes with 12 shades, ranging from gold-bronze to espressos. You can use it to go soft and natural or rev them up with a J.Lo smoky eye.

4. Cream blush
The Colour Prevails by Nonie Creme drugstore line was conceptualized by the former founding creative director of Butter London and inspired by the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen. The Bashful Beauty Cheek & Lip Multi Stick ($13, Walgreens.com) goes on super smooth and gives you a refreshed look.

Steal_brow palette5. Brow palette
After you treat yourself to a brow wax to get your shape in check, check out Maybelline’s Brow Drama Pro Palette ($12.99, Ulta.com). It comes with brow wax, color, highlighter (for underneath your brow) and a little brush.
