QUE BACH & JOHN HWANG
John and I had talked about getting married, but we didn’t want to take any significant steps toward it until we’d set up a meeting between both of our parents—that was very important for both of us.
I was pretty nervous about the meeting between the parents because of the language and cultural barrier. I’m from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and John is from Inchon, South Korea, but grew up in Charlotte. Neither of our parents spoke fluent English, so we each had to act as translators.
Thankfully, that meeting went smoothly; both parents got along and gave us their blessing.
Our next challenge: finding an engagement ring. After one jewelry store visit, I decided that I wanted to help choose my ring—and I’m pretty sure John was relieved he wouldn’t have to make the selection by himself. So last spring, John and I spent a few days in L.A. for my best friend’s wedding. It was there (the day before the ceremony) that we found the ring I really wanted, and John proposed. We set our wedding date for exactly one year later.
