This Game of Thrones-themed shoot will get you hyped for the premiere

OK, so the “Game of Thrones” Red Wedding episode broke our hearts. And the hit HBO show definitely has a penchant for tragedy, not romance.

But this stunning “Game of Thrones”-inspired photo shoot by Charlotte-based Katie Lee of Katherine Elena Photography and Samie Roberts of Something Perfect Weddings & Events is everything we love about the show—the strong women, the extravagant attire, even a castle (in Spruce Pines, N.C.!) and dire wolf—with none of the heartbreak. And it’s got us hyped for the season seven premiere this summer. Lee, the photographer, tells us about her inspiration:
This shoot was something that I’ve had in my head for a while and wasn’t quite sure how to make it come alive. I wanted to really highlight the women of the show for their strength and beauty, so I talked to Samie Roberts at Something Perfect Weddings about taking some inspiration from Daenarys Targaryen (a.k.a. the Mother of Dragons) as well as Sansa Stark. Both are very strong, powerful women in their own right while also having an ethereal air about them. The House of Stark on the show has a dire wolf on the family crest and a large part of the show is the dire wolves that help to protect each of the Stark children, so I really wanted that to be the “wow” element of the shoot.
I started researching wolf dog rescues (there are no full-blooded wolves in this region anymore) and found the website of Full Moon Farm in Black Mountain. I reached out to them to see if they might be interested in participating in the shoot and they were happy to do so! I think one of my favorite parts of the day was when we were about 30 minutes into shooting and someone walked into the room and said, “I think the wolf is here.” River was an incredible animal (and way larger than I expected!) and couldn’t have been better for the shoot.

When we reached out to Celestial Cakery about the cake, the only thing we knew was that we wanted to incorporate the dragon scales in some way. We actually had some moss that was being using on the table that was brought out and added to the cake stand to tie everything together.

For the dining room, we knew we wanted something grand and elaborate. In my mind, I was picturing an upscale version of Medieval Times. Elizabeth from Events by Elizabeth Ashley coordinated the food and placed it on the platters that she brought from Miss Match Rentals.
For the invitation, Samie Roberts reached out to her longtime friend, Whitney of Writing on Hearts, who is newer to the Charlotte wedding calligraphy scene but definitely making an impact. We gave her the inspiration of the love story between Daenarys and Khal Drogo (her late husband), who called each other “moon of my life” and “my sun and stars.”

For the dresses, I worked with Erin of RCB Fashion to come up with something fresh for each of the girls. I knew that I wanted some sort of cape with beading and a very flowy dress that mimicked one of the classic Daenarys dresses.
For Sansa, I gave her the inspiration of a strong yet feminine warrior. We went back and forth on a style for her for a while, but when she showed me the blue velvet she had and said that she would make a long train, I just let her run with it. What she came up with couldn’t have been better. A lot of the capes on the show have fur elements, so we discussed the idea of the fur stole. We looked at it for a while and knew the dress was missing something, so Erin added the fur cuffs.
